The best squirrel baffle for a 4×4 post, for most yards, is the Erva Cylindrical Baffle (4X4 Post): a galvanized steel tube made in the USA, sized for a standard 3.5″ post, in a 23″ squirrel length (SB4) or a 28″ raccoon length (SB3). If your feeder is already up, a wrap-around disk like the Erva SB7 goes on without taking it down. Most baffles are made for round poles, so check the fit. This guide uses manufacturer specs, not hands-on testing. It’s part of our guide to bird feeder pole systems.

Quick Picks: Best 4×4 Post Baffles

Avoid: round-pole baffles. Woodlink’s 2-piece Torpedo Baffle, for example, has a coupler for poles 1/2″ to 1-3/8″ in diameter, so it won’t fit a 4×4.

Cylinder vs. Disk: Which Style Works on a 4×4?

Cylinder (stovepipe) baffles are long metal tubes that rest on a bracket screwed to the post, leaving a climber nothing to grip. Length stops raccoons, which reach higher than squirrels, so Erva sells 23″ (squirrel) and 28″ (raccoon) heights. The catch: a cylinder slides over the top of the post, so the feeder has to come off first.

Disk (wrap-around) baffles are wide, shallow steel disks, about 22 inches across, that fasten around the post. A climbing squirrel hits the underside and can’t get around the edge, and they’re easier to add to a post that already carries a feeder.

Rule of thumb: squirrels only and a feeder already up? A disk is the easiest fix. Raccoons, or building from scratch? Get a 28″ cylinder. Our raccoon baffle vs squirrel baffle comparison goes deeper.

Erva Cylindrical Baffle (SB4 and SB3): Best Overall

Who it’s for: most people with a standard pressure-treated or cedar 4×4.

Erva makes this baffle from corrosion-resistant galvanized steel with a satin tan powder coat meant to match a natural wood post. It comes in two heights on one Erva product page: the SB4 at 23″ for squirrels and the SB3 at 28″ for raccoons. Both are 7-1/2″ in diameter (Erva’s wholesale catalog says 8″), fit a standard post through a 3-5/8″ opening, and come with a mounting kit and 4 screws. The bracket screws to the post and the cylinder rests on it. Erva lists it as made in the USA.

If you’ve seen raccoons, buy the 28″ SB3 up front rather than upgrading later.

Pros

  • Purpose-built for standard 4x4s
  • All-steel construction
  • Tan finish blends with wood
  • Two lengths for squirrels or raccoons

Cons

  • Feeder has to come off to install it
  • The 28″ SB3 needs more post height (see placement below)
  • When we checked, erva.com showed the 23″ SB4 as unavailable

Erva SB7 Disk Baffle: Best Made-in-USA Disk

Who it’s for: people who want to add a baffle without taking anything off the post.

The SB7 is a 22-1/2″ disk for standard 4×4 posts (3-5/8″ opening), made from galvanized steel with integrated mounting tabs and included screws. Erva’s catalog describes it as a wraparound baffle. Finishes are tan (SB7), copper (SB7C), and plain galvanized (SB7GLV); the copper version showed as unavailable when we checked. It’s made in the USA.

Pros: goes around an existing setup; three finishes. Cons: not sold as a dedicated raccoon baffle; mount it high enough that squirrels can’t jump onto the top.

Woodlink / Audubon 22″ Wrap-Around 4×4 Post Mount Baffle: Easiest to Find

Who it’s for: buyers who want a widely stocked option.

Woodlink lists two colors on its own site: green (item 24632/BAF3GR) and bronze (24633/BCBAF22). Both are 22″ across and 7-5/8″ tall, with a listed weight of 4 lb. The product is sold under both the Woodlink and Audubon names. Woodlink’s spec pages don’t include installation instructions, so check the included ones on whether to fit it before or after the feeder.

Pros: widely available; two colors; wrap-around design. Cons: Woodlink publishes few specs beyond size and weight.

Audubon / Woodlink Torpedo Raccoon Baffle

Woodlink’s Audubon line includes a Torpedo Raccoon Baffle (item 24639/HM49) listed at 7.75″ in diameter by 28″ tall. Woodlink’s page doesn’t say which posts it fits, so confirm the listing says 4×4 before buying. Like any cylinder, the feeder must come off to install it.

How to Place a Baffle on a 4×4 Post

The 4-5-8 rule of thumb

A baffle only works if squirrels can’t go around it. FeederKeep uses a simple 4-5-8 rule of thumb. It’s our shorthand, not an official standard, and its numbers come from Erva’s own guidance: on its 4×4 baffle page, Erva says to place feeders 8–10 feet from railings, roofs, or trees and that baffles should stand at least 4 feet from the ground.

  • 4 feet: the baffle at least 4 feet off the ground (Erva).
  • 5 feet: the bottom of the feeder about 5 feet up, above the baffle (our suggestion, so the feeder sits clear of the baffle).
  • 8 feet: the whole setup at least 8 feet from anything a squirrel can launch from, such as trees, fences, deck rails, and roofs. Erva says 8–10 feet, so treat 10 as the safer number.

Check above the feeder too: overhanging branches let squirrels drop down onto it. Our guide to how far a feeder should be from trees covers measuring launch points.

Post fit: measure first

A nominal 4×4 measures about 3.5″ × 3.5″, and Erva’s standard 4×4 baffles have a 3-5/8″ opening for that size. If your post is rough-sawn, wrapped in a vinyl sleeve, or PVC, measure it. Erva’s wholesale catalog lists the white SB3ACT (28″) for “true” 4×4 posts, but erva.com’s store doesn’t list it, so check availability.

Installation basics

  1. Decide on the feeder height first, then mark the baffle position below it.
  2. For a cylinder, screw the bracket to the post at the mark, then slide the cylinder over the top until it rests on the bracket.
  3. For a disk, fit it around the post and screw its tabs or brackets on.
  4. Check that nothing touches the baffle: plants, a trellis, or a feeder hook below it.

Raccoons

If you’ve seen raccoons, or feeders are emptied overnight, choose a 28″ cylinder such as the Erva SB3, and bring seed in at night if problems continue.

Mounting a smart feeder on a 4×4

Camera feeders are heavy (Birdfy lists its Feeder 2 Duo at 3.9 lb and Feeder Metal at 7.34 lb) and need sun and a good Wi-Fi signal. A 4×4 handles the weight easily, and a baffle matters more when the feeder holds a camera. Our guide to keeping squirrels off a smart bird feeder covers the full plan. Frequently Asked Questions

Will a regular pole baffle fit a 4×4 post?

Usually not. Many torpedo and cone baffles are made for round poles; Woodlink’s 2-piece Torpedo Baffle fits poles 1/2″ to 1-3/8″ in diameter. Buy one labeled for 4×4 posts.

How high should a squirrel baffle be on a 4×4 post?

Erva says baffles should stand at least 4 feet from the ground. Mount the feeder above the baffle.

How far from trees should a baffled 4×4 post be?

Erva says 8–10 feet from railings, roofs, and trees. Ten feet gives more margin.

Can I install a baffle without taking my feeder down?

With a wrap-around disk baffle, usually yes. Cylinder baffles slide over the top of the post, so the feeder has to come off first.

Can squirrels chew through a metal baffle?

Erva’s baffles are galvanized steel, not plastic, so chewing isn’t the usual failure. Squirrels get past baffles by jumping, so height and distance from launch points matter more.
