Is Birdfy Membership worth it? For most single-feeder buyers, no: buying a feeder’s AI Lifetime Free version and staying on the Free level is cheaper. As of Oct 2026, the lifetime upgrade on every model Birdfy.com sells both ways cost less than one year of Plus. A paid plan makes sense if you own subscription-AI devices on busy feeders, want longer clips and storage, or run several devices. This guide uses Birdfy’s plan pages and Help Center, not our own testing. For model specs, see every Birdfy feeder compared.
Quick Answer
- Buying a new feeder and want bird ID every day? Buy an AI Lifetime Free version and stay on Free. Examples: the Feeder 2 Pro, if the listing says AI Lifetime Free View the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro on Birdfy.com, or the Metal 2 4K’s AI Lifetime Free version. - Own one subscription-AI feeder at a quiet spot? Try Free first; 10 AI recognitions a day may be enough.
- One or two subscription-AI devices on busy feeders, or want longer clips and Bird Data? Look at Plus. See Birdfy Membership Plus on Birdfy.com
- Three or more devices? Pro covers up to 10. See Birdfy Membership Pro on Birdfy.com
What Birdfy Membership Is
Per the Birdfy Help Center, Birdfy Membership is “an account-based membership system with three levels: Free, Plus, and Pro.” Benefits are tied to your account, not a single device, and one plan can cover several devices up to its limit. You can change which devices are covered at any time.
If you had an older Birdfy cloud subscription, the Help Center says you can keep renewing it until you cancel, but once old plans are removed from sale you can’t buy them new or restart them after cancelling.

Details from the Help Center that the table doesn’t show:
- Recognition covers more than birds. Birdfy’s AI identifies the species (and female/male for some species) and also recognizes 16 common backyard animals, including squirrels, chipmunks, and raccoons.
- Clip length is a maximum. You can adjust recording mode and length in Moment settings, and some devices stop recording when the bird leaves.
- The discount covers products sold on Birdfy.com, such as feeders, birdhouses, birdbaths, and poles, but not software or add-ons and accessories. It stacks with other promotions and applies only to orders placed after you join.
- If your plan lapses, saved Collection videos are kept for one year and stay downloadable, but you can’t add new ones. Clips recorded while lapsed won’t be identified after you renew.
What the Free level gets you
Free isn’t just a trial. Per the Help Center, Free members get 30-day cloud retention, clips up to 20 seconds, 5GB of Collection storage, and 10 free AI bird recognitions per day: the AI identifies birds in up to 10 Moment videos a day, and the limit resets daily. Live view, alerts, and clips work either way.
A quiet balcony feeder might never hit 10. A busy yard feeder can record more than that in a morning, and later clips go unidentified. Birdfy’s product pages for “AI by Subscription” devices still describe a “7-day trial, then by subscription,” so check in the app how the Free allowance applies to your device.
Which Birdfy Devices Come With Lifetime AI?
Here’s what Birdfy’s product pages and spec sheets showed on Oct 11, 2026. Listings change, so check before you buy.
| AI status | Models |
|---|---|
| Lifetime AI included | Feeder 2 Duo · Feeder Bamboo A Pro (spec sheet) · Feeder Rookie (spec sheet) |
| Sold both ways on Birdfy.com (pick the version) | Birdfy Feeder (1st gen) · Feeder Metal 2 4K · Bath Pro |
| Two versions per Birdfy’s compare page | Feeder 2 Pro (Birdfy.com currently shows one listing that doesn’t name its AI version) |
| AI by subscription | Feeder 2 · Feeder Metal · Hum Feeder · Cam 2K (page copy; its spec sheet lists both) |
For other models, check the AI line on the listing. Birdfy also sells “+ 1 Year Plus Membership” bundles for several feeders, including the Rookie, Feeder Metal, and Hum Feeder; compare a bundle with the standalone feeder plus a year of Plus.

What “AI Lifetime Free” Covers, and the Fine Print
Birdfy’s product pages say the AI Lifetime Free version needs “no activation or extra payments.” Three caveats:
- “Subject to change.” Birdfy’s Feeder 2 Duo page says the “AI service is free for the device’s lifetime; subject to change with firmware updates or service terms.”
- It’s about recognition. The Help Center says Lifetime AI “can continue to be used with its original benefits” and describes Bird Data as “member-exclusive.” It doesn’t say lifetime devices get longer clips, retention, or storage, so assume those still follow your membership level.
- It doesn’t convert into membership time, but each active Lifetime AI service qualifies for a one-time 70% discount on Plus or Pro.
Cost Math (as of Oct 2026)
Birdfy.com prices checked Oct 11, 2026. Prices change often; re-check before you buy.
- Plus: $79.99 per year. Pro: $149.99 per year (extra devices beyond 10 cost $1.99 per device per month, per the Help Center).
- Lifetime premium (AI Lifetime Free price minus AI by Subscription price, same model):
- Feeder Metal 2 4K: $259.99 vs $229.99 = $30
- Birdfy Feeder (1st gen, standard kit): $129.99 vs $109.99 = $20
- Bath Pro: $199.99 vs $169.99 = $30
- Plus over time: $79.99 (1 year), $159.98 (2 years), $239.97 (3 years).
On these prices, the lifetime premium was less than half of one year of Plus, so for AI alone the lifetime version wins from year one. (The Help Center’s migration example uses a $69.99/year Plus reference price for annual plans via Stripe; the math comes out the same.)
Membership can still be worth it if you want the other perks (longer clips, more storage, Bird Data), have two subscription-AI devices to cover with one Plus plan, or are about to place a large Birdfy.com order where the 15–20% discount offsets part of the plan.
Multi-Device Households: When Pro Makes Sense
Plus covers up to 2 devices for bird recognition; you choose them under Birdfy Membership → Membership Benefits → Linked Devices. Pro covers 10. If you have more than two subscription-AI devices (a feeder, a birdbath, a hummingbird feeder, and a camera, say), Pro is the only level that covers them all. Birdfy doesn’t say whether lifetime-AI devices use a plan’s device slot, so check in the app.
Already a Birdfy Subscriber? Migration and the Trial
- Migrating: in the app, go to Home → “My” (top-right icon) → My Subscriptions → Upgrade. Per the Help Center, the remaining value of your unexpired legacy services (excluding Lifetime AI) becomes membership days: remaining value ÷ new annual membership fee × 365.
- Membership trial: one per account, with all Plus benefits, including the Birdfy.com discount, and it doesn’t override existing benefits. Accounts that already bought a membership or migrated can’t claim it, so claim the trial before migrating.
Decision Guide by User Type
- First-time buyer, one feeder: a lifetime-AI model (the Rookie on a budget, or a 2 Pro listing that says AI Lifetime Free) and the Free plan. View the Birdfy Feeder Rookie on Birdfy.com · View the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro on Birdfy.com
- Enthusiast: the Feeder 2 Duo includes lifetime AI, so a plan is only about clips and storage. View the Birdfy Feeder 2 Duo on Birdfy.com
- Squirrel-country buyer: the Metal 2 4K in its AI Lifetime Free version; its AI also tags squirrels, which helps find launch points. See our smart feeder squirrel guide. View the Birdfy Feeder Metal 2 4K on Birdfy.com
- One subscription-AI feeder: try Free, then the Plus trial, then decide.
- Two subscription-AI devices: Plus. Three or more: Pro.
- Lifetime-AI owner who wants longer clips: use the one-time 70% discount on Plus or Pro.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Birdfy feeders work without a subscription?
Yes. Live view, alerts, and clips are free, and the Free level includes 10 AI bird recognitions per day.
What’s the difference between Birdfy Plus and Pro?
Both include unlimited AI recognition and Bird Data. Plus covers 2 devices with 30-second clips, 60-day retention, 20GB of storage, and 15% off on Birdfy.com. Pro covers 10 devices with 60-second clips, 90-day retention, 100GB, and 20% off.

It’s included for the device’s lifetime, but Birdfy says it’s “subject to change with firmware updates or service terms.”
Does my Lifetime AI move to the new membership?
It doesn’t need to. It keeps working with its original benefits, and each active Lifetime AI service gets a one-time 70% discount on Plus or Pro.
