Which Birdfy feeder should you buy? For most people, the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro: it pairs a 2K tracking portrait lens with a 1080p wide lens and includes a solar panel. Pick the Rookie on a tight budget and the Metal 2 4K if squirrels chew everything. This guide compares every current Birdfy model using Birdfy’s published specs, professional reviews, and owner reports. We haven’t tested most of these feeders hands-on. The exception is the Feeder 2 Pro I use in my own yard; first-hand notes from it are clearly labeled.

- Best if you already own a feeder you like: Birdfy Cam 2K. A stand-alone camera you aim at it. View the Birdfy Cam 2K on Birdfy.com
The one buying mistake to avoid: several models come in near-identical “AI Lifetime Free” and “AI by Subscription” versions. The subscription version is cheaper up front, but unlimited species ID needs a paid Birdfy Membership. Our Birdfy Membership vs AI Lifetime breakdown does the math.

Birdfy Feeder Rookie: Best First Smart Feeder
Who it’s for: beginners, renters, and balcony birders.
Birdfy’s smallest, cheapest seed feeder weighs 0.96 lb and records 1080p/30fps, with a free 1280×960/60fps slow-motion mode. The spec sheet lists a 44 oz bin, a 5,200mAh battery, IP66, and “Lifetime Free” AI.
Pros: cheapest Birdfy; light enough for railings.
Cons: fixed camera (one owner says it misses part of the feeding area).
Squirrel notes: Light plastic, so rely on placement and a baffle. Buying elsewhere? Birdfy’s help center lists solar as optional, so check the listing.

Birdfy Feeder (1st Gen): The Original, Still on Sale
Who it’s for: budget buyers who want a full-size feeder.
Sold with or without solar and with subscription or lifetime AI, the original has a 2K high-quality mode, a 50 oz bin, and the widest add-on support. PCMag found it recorded at a choppier 15fps than the Feeder 2.
Squirrel notes: Use a baffle; Birdfy says its Shield add-on protects against predators “excluding squirrels.”

Birdfy Feeder 2 vs 2 Pro vs 2 Duo
All three share one body (42 oz hopper, included seed guard, IP66, 9,000mAh battery per camera) and differ in cameras, solar, and AI terms, as Birdfy’s Feeder 2 Series comparison page shows. TechRadar’s reviewer had squirrels break plastic on one, so consider Birdfy’s “chew-proof” Metal Seed Guard (Feeder 2 Series only). Birdfy Feeder 2: The Basic Model
Who it’s for: buyers who don’t need species ID, or plan to pay for a membership.
The base Feeder 2 has one 1080p wide-angle camera, optional solar, and AI on a “7-day trial, then by subscription” basis.

Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro: Best Overall
Who it’s for: most buyers who want close-ups without flagship pricing.
Same feeder, better camera: a 1080p wide lens plus a 3MP/2K portrait lens that pans to track birds, with a 3W panel included and AI listed as “Lifetime / Subscribe” by version. PCMag rated it 4/5, calling it “the most sensible entry in Birdfy’s trio.”
Pros: portrait close-ups; solar included; lifetime AI available.
Cons: plastic body; no pole-top mount.
From my yard: I bought a Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro about three months ago, and the video quality is great. Mine is mounted on a pole, and so far no squirrels have gotten to it.

Birdfy Feeder 2 Duo: Best for Seeing Every Angle
The Duo adds a 1080p side camera to the Pro’s dual-lens front camera, includes a 5W panel, and lists lifetime AI. TechRadar gave it 5 stars, though the side camera only angles correctly on one side and the alarm and lights “did little to deter” squirrels.
Cons: priciest of the series; plastic body.

Birdfy Feeder Metal: The Original Chew-Proof Option
Who it’s for: heavy-squirrel yards on a mid-range budget.
Birdfy markets it as “chew-proof and scratch-proof.” It has built-in 2W solar, a 1080p camera, an 84.5 oz bin, and AI by Subscription, and at 7.34 lb it needs a sturdy mount.
Squirrel notes: Metal stops chewing, not eating, so still use a baffle.

Birdfy Feeder Metal 2 4K: Best for Squirrel Country
Birdfy’s only 4K feeder has a chew-proof metal body (Birdfy’s term), color and infrared night vision, a 60.9 oz bin, a 9,000mAh battery with built-in 2W solar, and a pole-top adapter in the box. It’s also the only Birdfy feeder with dual-band 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi. Birdfy.com sells subscription and lifetime-AI versions.
Owner reviews on Birdfy.com mostly praise the image quality, though one owner says the fixed camera angle framed birds worse than an older plastic Birdfy, and another says squirrels “still find a way to land.”
Squirrel notes: “Chew-proof” (Birdfy’s term) doesn’t stop squirrels eating. Pair it with a baffle on a pole out of jumping range; our guide on how to keep squirrels off a smart feeder covers the full setup.

Birdfy Bamboo, Wood, and Ebony Feeders: The Natural-Look Options
The Bamboo A Pro has a dual-lens camera like the Feeder 2 Pro’s, lifetime AI, solar power, and a metal seed guard that protects the bamboo from teeth. (Birdfy’s pages disagree on its capacity and panel type; check the listing.) The Bamboo and Bamboo Mini have two seed bins for two mixes, a 2K high-quality mode, and an included 3W panel; the Mini weighs about 6.6 lb and has a metal seed plate. The wooden Ebony and Wood feeders record 1080p, have built-in 2W solar, and list AI by Subscription.
Birdfy’s FAQ notes bamboo may show slight mildew over time. Wood is chewable, so the A Pro’s metal guard (or Birdfy’s metal add-ons for the Bamboo) helps.

Birdfy Hum Feeder and Hum Feeder Duo: For Hummingbirds
The Hum Feeder has side-swivel ports for profile shots, a built-in ant moat, and a 1080p camera; its AI identifies 150+ hummingbird species on a “7-day free trial, then by subscription” basis. The Hum Feeder Duo uses two 2K cameras to watch from both sides.

Birdfy Cam 2K: Make Your Existing Feeder Smart
Who it’s for: owners of a squirrel-resistant feeder they already trust.
The Cam 2K mounts on a bendable arm aimed at your feeder, records 2K, and includes solar on Birdfy.com. Birdfy’s spec table mentions both AI versions, but the current listing describes AI by subscription, so check before buying. The Birdfy Pole Pro bundles the camera and a solar panel with Birdfy’s baffled feeder pole.

How to Choose a Birdfy Feeder
1. Decide how much species ID matters
Birdfy’s AI covers 6,000+ bird species, sold two ways:
- “AI Lifetime Free” versions include species ID for the device’s life (Birdfy’s fine print says this is “subject to change with firmware updates or service terms”).
- “AI by Subscription” versions come with a 7-day trial on the product page. Birdfy now runs an account-based Birdfy Membership with Free, Plus, and Pro levels. Per the Birdfy Help Center, Free includes 10 AI bird recognitions per day, 30-day cloud retention, 20-second clips, and 5GB of Collection storage. Plus (2 devices) and Pro (10 devices) add unlimited recognition, longer retention, and store discounts. Product pages still say “7-day trial, then by subscription,” so check how the free allowance applies to your device.
Rule of thumb: if you want daily species ID for years, compare the Lifetime version’s extra cost with current membership pricing. See Birdfy Membership plans on Birdfy.com
2. Check your Wi-Fi where the feeder will go
Everything uploads to the cloud, and most models are 2.4GHz only, so a weak signal means missed clips. Check your phone’s signal at the spot first; a mesh node or outdoor extender can help.
3. Plan power: solar vs charging
Batteries range from 5,000–5,200mAh (Rookie, original Feeder, Cam 2K, Hum Feeder Duo) to 9,000mAh (Feeder 2 Series, Feeder Metal, Metal 2 4K). Solar comes three ways:
- Built-in: Feeder Metal, Metal 2 4K, Ebony, Wood. No cable to chew.
- Included external panel: Feeder 2 Pro (3W), Feeder 2 Duo (5W), Bamboo and Bamboo Mini (3W), Cam 2K and Rookie (Birdfy.com listings).
- Optional: Feeder 2, Feeder (1st gen), Hum Feeder.
PCMag notes external panel cables can get chewed, a point for built-in solar.
4. Be realistic about squirrels
No smart feeder keeps squirrels out on its own, and Birdfy’s alarm and lights didn’t deter squirrels in TechRadar’s or PCMag’s reviews. What works:
- Placement and a baffle on a pole, out of jumping range of trees, fences, and roofs. If you’re mounting on a wooden post, see our best baffles for a 4×4 post.
- Chew-resistant materials, such as the Metal and Metal 2 4K bodies or the Metal Seed Guard for the Feeder 2 Series.
- Skip the Birdfy Shield for this job: Birdfy says it’s for predators “excluding squirrels.”
5. Mounting
Smart feeders are heavy (Feeder 2 Duo 3.9 lb; Feeder Metal 7.34 lb), and only the Metal 2 4K includes a pole-top adapter. Birdfy’s own Pole has 8 hooks, a baffle, and a ground auger. View the Birdfy Pole on Birdfy.com For other options, see poles strong enough for a smart feeder.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Birdfy feeders require a subscription?
No. Live view, alerts, and recorded clips work in the free app. Species ID is the exception: Lifetime versions include it; Subscription versions get a trial, then unlimited IDs need a paid membership (the Free level includes 10 per day).
Which Birdfy feeder has the best camera?
On paper, the Feeder Metal 2 4K, with 3840×2160 video. For close-up framing, the Feeder 2 Pro, Feeder 2 Duo, and Bamboo A Pro have a 2K portrait lens that tracks birds.
Can squirrels get into a Birdfy feeder?
Yes, they can. Birdfy feeders are squirrel-resistant at best: Birdfy markets the Feeder Metal, Metal 2 4K, and Metal Seed Guard as chew-proof, but squirrels can still reach the seed. Use a baffle and good placement.
Do Birdfy feeders work with 5GHz Wi-Fi?
Only the Feeder Metal 2 4K supports 5GHz (plus 2.4GHz). Every other current Birdfy feeder lists 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.
